Residents of Rivers State have reacted to the recent statement by the Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari that the country loses two hundred thousand barrels of crude oil per day to pipeline vandalism and theft by some youths in the Niger Delta.
Speaking in an interview with Radio Rivers Correspondent, Nsikak Kufre the respondents, Uche Wisdom, Gallazy Petras and Ali Abdul Malik attributed it to insecurity of the pipelines, lack of patriotism and unemployment of many youth in the country.
They however noted that the economic sabotage was also affecting the Niger Delta environment negatively with the resurgence of Soot in the atmosphere.
The respondents called for more public enlightenment campaigns by the government on the dangers of pipeline vandalism and its effects on the country’s economy.
They also urged the government to repair the four refineries and provide employment for the youths.
