The U.S has warned that it would retaliate after the investigation is complete against a rocket attack against Iraq’s Ain al-Asad Air Base in Western Iraq where Iraqi and American troops are housed.
The Pentagon said just two days ahead of Pope Francis’s visit to the Country, a U.S contractor died of cardiac failure after rocket fire hit an Iraqi base hosting coalition troops.
It said the United States has shown that it would not Shy away from responding to attacks against its personnel when necessary.
White House Press Secretary, Jen Psaki suggested that the calculated U.S airstrikes last week could be a model for a military response, saying those strikes were in response to an attack on American Forces in Northern Iraq earlier in February.
Psaki said if they assess that further response is warranted, they will take action again in a manner and time of their choosing.
The U.S Defence Department said no U.S. Civilian members were injured, but the civilian contractor suffered a cardiac episode while sheltering and died shortly after.
Pope Francis said he would go ahead with the first ever Papal visit to the country so as not to disappoint the Iraqi people.
