SOCIO-ECONOMIC RIGHTS AND ACCOUNTABILITY PROJECT GIVES PRESIDENT BUHARI SEVEN DAYS TO WITHDRAW THREAT TO BLOCK SIM CARDS OF NIGERIANS.

Socio-Economic, Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has given Buhari’s administration seven days to withdraw the threat to block sim cards of Nigerians, not linked with Natioal Identity Number.

The group said it will take legal steps after the seven days to upturn the order.

In a statement on Sunday 20th December 2020, SERAP urged President Muhammadu Buhari to instruct the Minister of Comminications and Digital Economy, Mr Isa Pantaml and Director-General of the National Identity Management Commissions, NIMC, Mr Aliy Abubakar to stop the push for registration of Nigerians for National Identity Number.

It also urged Buhari to instruct the officials to withdraw the threat to block Sim cards, as the data being sought already exist in several platforms, including Bank Verification Numbers, BVN, drivers licence, internatinnal passport and voters card.
