Thousands of people took to the streets of Russia today to demand the release of jailed opposition leader, Alexei Navalny.

A monitoring group said more than one thousand demonstrators were detained by Police.

Authorities tried to stem the tide of demonstrations after tens of thousands of people took part last weekend in the largest and most widespread show of discontent in Russia in years.

Navalny, forty-four, anti-corruption investigator and high profile critic of President Vladimir Putin was arrested on January seventeen upon returning from Germany where he spent five months recovering from nerve agent poisoning that he blames on the Kremlin.

Russian authorities rejected the accusations.

In Moscow, authorities closed metro stations near the Kremlin, cut bus traffic and ordered restaurants and stores to close.
