Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has expressed displeasure of most Nigerians over the confirmation of the immediate past Service Chiefs as Ambassadors by the Senate.
Governor Wike was speaking when members of the Senate Committee on Niger Delta led by its Chairman, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt, saying Nigerians are not happy with the action of the Senate, having previously called for their sack over their inability to tackle insurgency in the country.
The Governor said as distinguished Senators, they should be courageous and do away with party affiliation while taking certain decisions that would affect the nation.
Governor Wike also expressed dismay over the interference of the Presidency, the National Assembly and the ruling party in the activities of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, saying such interference inhibits effective performance of the commission.
He noted that instead of NDDC to partner the state governments in the region to embark on legacy projects, the commission had turned into a cash cow, where money was being signed out to ensure that he was removed from office.
The Governor lauded members of the committee for carrying out their oversight function of the NDDC in the state but urged them to do it in a transparent matter.
He used the forum to commend the Senate for the quick approval of money used by the state government in the execution of Federal Government projects and assured that the money would be utilized to provide more infrastructure for Rivers people.
Earlier, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi lauded Governor Wike for being a strong voice in the Niger Delta and always speaking the truth as well as advancing the interest of the region.
Senator Nwaoboshi who noted the reservations of the Governor on the NDDC, assured him of the committee’s commitment to ensure that the aims for the creation of the commission were achieved.
He also commended the Governor for ensuring the security of Rivers people and providing the enabling environment for staff of the commission to operate.
