Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s call for the continuation of open grazing for herdsmen.
It would be recalled that seventeen Southern Governors had after a meeting in Delta State imposed a ban on open grazing in the region.
But President Buhari had directed States to revive Cattle grazing routes across the Country .
The President who stated this during a television interview disclosed that he had asked the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Abubakarr Malami to begin the process of recovering land from persons who had converted cattle grazing routes for personal use.
Speaking at a June 12 Memorial Lecture in Akure, Governor Akeredolu said that things had changed and the system used in the first Republic can no longer work.
According to him, things are changing and there has to be a paradigm shift adding that Ethiopia has about two hundred million cattle but nobody can see them on the streets as they are located in the hinter lands designated for grazing.
