As the World Marked International Widow’s Day on Wednesday 23rd June, the Acting Chairperson of FIDA, Rivers State Branch, Nnenna Igbokwe has called on Nigerians to rise and speak out against injustice meted out on widows in the society.

The Legal Practitioner speaking in an interview with Radio Rivers Reporter, Asitonka Fubara-Tams said collective efforts of Nigerians was required to defend and ensure that some cultural beliefs against widows are discorded to avoid continued widows pain.

According to her, the right of widows must be insured to enable them unlock their full potentials in defence of their families.

Also speaking, a Human Rights Activist, Jim Rex Okeke called on well meaning organizations to help widows struggling to cope with the challenges of life, and stressed the need for women to safeguard their marriages by ensuring their legal status without their husbands against future negative family interference.

The theme of this year’s World Widows Day is “Invisible Women, Invisible Problems” a day to observe and discuss the challenges women face after the death of their husbands.
